Where to Use JST KZN Slurry Pumps

JS Pumps designed the KZN for muddy water from civil engineering and building works, and for agricultural waste. Typical jobs include dewatering excavations, cofferdams and shafts where the water carries sand and silt, emptying settling tanks and lagoons, and moving slurry around quarries and aggregate yards. The agitator earns its keep wherever solids settle: in a sump where a standard drainage pump would sit in silt and block, the KZN keeps stirring the bed and pumping it away.

Size the pump to your duty point rather than its maximum figures. Add the vertical lift to the friction loss in the hose to get the total head, then read the flow at that head from the curve; our guide to pump head and flow rate shows how. Published curves are for water, and thick slurry will not perform as well, so leave a margin.

Know where the range stops. For clean or lightly dirty water without heavy solids, a JST or JST-H drainage pump is lighter and less expensive. What does the agitator on a KZN pump do?

It stirs up solids that have settled at the pump inlet and keeps them in suspension, so they are carried through the pump instead of building up around it. That keeps the impeller and flow chamber clear in sand and sludge that would stop a plain drainage pump.

Should I choose a standard KZN, a KZN-H or a KZN-L?

Start with the standard KZN on this page, which balances flow and head. Choose a KZN-H if your total head is close to or beyond what the standard model reaches, and a KZN-L if you need more volume over a short lift. The H versions come in 5.5, 7.5 and 11 kW, and the L versions in 15 and 22 kW.

Why does the JST-110 KZN move more water than the JST-150 KZN?

The two are built for different duties. The JST-110 KZN is tuned for volume, at up to 4,135 l/min, while the JST-150 KZN gives up some flow (3,305 l/min maximum) to reach 32 m of head instead of 22 m. If your lift is modest, the 110 is the better choice.

What size solids can a JST KZN pump handle?

Up to 20 mm for the JST-37 KZN, 25 mm for the JST-55 and JST-75 KZN, and 35 mm for the JST-110, JST-150 and JST-220 KZN. These figures are for granular solids such as sand and grit, not rag or fibres.

Can I run a KZN pump on a single-phase supply?

No. Every JST KZN is a 400v three-phase pump, and it needs a suitable starter or control panel with motor protection sized to its full load current. Check that your generator or supply can handle the starting load of the larger models.

Are KZN pumps suitable for sewage?

They are slurry pumps, designed for abrasive solids such as sand, silt and sludge, not for raw sewage. Sewage carries wipes, rag and fibres that are better handled by a vortex or cutter impeller, so for foul water choose a dedicated sewage pump.
