Description
The Pentair Biox 400/12 Automatic 230v (code 555-057) is the larger pump in the Biox range, delivering up to 450 litres per minute and a maximum head of 12 metres. It runs on a 230v single-phase supply, drawing 1.6 kW (7.2 A), and discharges through a 2-inch male BSP outlet. The fitted float switch starts the pump at about 400 mm of water and stops it at about 300 mm, so it can be left to run unattended.
Choose the 400/12 over the Biox 300/10 when the sump takes a higher inflow, serves more than one property, or the discharge has to travel further or climb higher, since extra head and pipe length both eat into flow. At 5 m of head, for example, the curve shows the 400/12 still moving well over 300 l/min. Both pumps share the same body, so you can upgrade without altering the sump. For a manual or three-phase pump with more output, see the Pentair Jung Priox range.
The pump body, motor shaft and impeller are all stainless steel, with a die-cast stainless vortex impeller that stays clear of the main flow so soft solids up to 40 mm pass through without clogging the blades. A mechanical seal runs in an oil chamber for continuous lubrication, and a V-ring guards it against sand. The motor is IP68 rated with class F insulation and built-in thermal overload protection, which stops the pump if it overheats and restarts it automatically once it has cooled.

Pentair states the Biox must not be used for sea water or for flammable, corrosive, explosive or dangerous liquids, or in swimming pools, and the pumped liquid should not exceed 40°C. It is a vortex pump, not a grinder, so it will not cut up wipes, sanitary products or rag. Never let it run dry, and connect it to a supply protected by a 30 mA RCD. The pump is supplied without a hose tail, so order a fitting to suit the 2-inch outlet.
