Pentair Biox Sewage Pumps
The Pentair Biox is an automatic stainless steel sewage pump for domestic and light commercial waste water. Both models in the range have a stainless steel pump body, motor shaft and die-cast stainless impeller, so they stand up to the corrosive conditions inside a sewage or effluent sump far better than a plastic-bodied pump. You may also see the range listed as Flotec Biox, Nocchi Biox or Pentair Jung Biox; it is the same pump.
A self-cleaning vortex impeller sits recessed above the flow rather than in it, so soft solids up to 40 mm pass through the volute without wrapping around the blades. Behind it, a mechanical seal running in an oil chamber, with a V-ring to keep sand away from the seal, protects the motor. The motor is rated IP68, has built-in thermal overload protection and resets itself once it cools.
Biox 300/10 or Biox 400/12?
Both pumps are 230v single phase and come fitted with a float switch, so they start and stop on their own. The factory setting switches the pump on when the water reaches about 400 mm and off at about 300 mm. Each has a 2-inch male BSP outlet and 10 metres of H07RN-F cable, and the two share the same body size, so either fits the same sump.
The difference is output. The Biox 300/10 moves up to 350 litres per minute with a maximum head of 11 metres, which suits a single house, annexe or outbuilding. The Biox 400/12 has a more powerful motor (1.6 kW input against 1.3 kW) and reaches 450 litres per minute and 12 metres, so choose it for higher inflows, a longer discharge run or where the outlet is well above the pump. Remember that the head and length of your pipework reduce the flow you actually get, so compare the duty point on the curve, not just the maximum figures.

Where to Use Pentair Biox Sewage Pumps
The Biox is built for permanent or temporary installation in a collection sump that takes dirty or waste water with suspended solids. Typical jobs include emptying a cesspit or effluent chamber, lifting waste water from a basement or outbuilding up to the main drain, and clearing flooded cellars or excavations where the water is carrying silt and debris. Because the float switch is fitted, the pump can be left in the sump to look after itself.
Size the sump around the float. The pump cuts in at about 400 mm of water and the float arm swings out to roughly 415 mm across, so the chamber needs to be deep and wide enough for the float to move freely without catching on the wall. A larger sump also means fewer starts: Pentair rates the Biox for no more than 30 starts an hour. On fixed pipework, fit a non-return valve on the discharge so the water in the rising main does not run back into the sump each time the pump stops. Frequently Asked Questions
What do the numbers in Biox 300/10 and 400/12 mean?
They identify the two sizes in the range, and the larger numbers mean a bigger pump. Go by the published figures rather than the name: the 300/10 delivers up to 350 l/min and 11 m of head, and the 400/12 up to 450 l/min and 12 m.
Can the Biox handle toilet waste?
The vortex impeller passes soft solids up to 40 mm, which covers domestic effluent and waste water. It is not a cutter or grinder pump, so wipes, sanitary products and rag can still cause blockages. If those are likely to reach the sump, a grinder sewage pump is the safer choice.
Is there a manual version of the Biox?
Both models we stock are automatic, with the float switch already fitted. You can raise or lower the switching levels by sliding the float cable through the slot in the handle. If you want to control the pump from a separate panel, choose a manual pump from the Priox range instead.
Will a Biox pump a sump completely dry?
No. In automatic mode the float stops the pump at around 300 mm of water, which protects it from running dry. The Biox must never be run without liquid in the sump.
What liquids should I not use it for?
Pentair rules out sea water and any flammable, corrosive, explosive or dangerous liquid, and the pumped liquid should be no hotter than 40°C. The Biox is not suitable for swimming pools. Maximum immersion depth is 7 metres.
What do I need to connect it?
A 230v supply protected by a 30 mA RCD, as the manufacturer requires, and a hose tail or pipe fitting for the 2-inch male BSP outlet, which is not supplied with the pump.
