Where to Use JS SK SS Cutter Pumps

Choose a stainless cutter pump when the liquid is aggressive and the solids are awkward. Typical installations include farm effluent and wash-down sumps, landfill leachate wells, food and process waste water pits, and industrial sumps where cast iron would rust. Size the pump on total head: the vertical lift plus friction in the pipework. Our explainer on pump head and flow rate shows how to work it out. If you need to push domestic sewage a long way through narrow pipe, a grinder such as the JS GS range or the three-phase JS GST range is the better tool. For ordinary sewage with no fibrous load and no corrosion risk, a cast iron vortex pump from the JS SV single-phase range or the JST SV 400v range is the simpler choice. What is the difference between a cutter pump and a grinder pump?

A cutter pump chops solids into smaller pieces and passes them through a 2, 3 or 4 inch outlet, so it moves large volumes at moderate head. A grinder, as explained in our article on how a sewage grinder pump works, reduces waste to a fine slurry for a small outlet and small-bore pipe, trading flow for the ability to pump further and higher. If your discharge pipe is 2 inch or larger, a cutter is usually the right choice.

Why choose 316 stainless steel instead of cast iron?

Cast iron sewage pumps work well in ordinary sewage, but acidic, salty or chemically active effluent attacks them over time. On the SK SS range the pump body, impeller, shaft and motor casing are all AISI 316 stainless steel, which resists that kind of corrosion far better.

Can these pumps handle chemicals?

JS Pumps designs the range for corrosive waste, but no material suits every chemical. Before you buy, check that your liquid is compatible with 316 stainless steel and with silicon carbide and carbon seal faces at its working temperature and concentration. Do the pumps come with a float switch?

No, all eight models are manual. The single-phase JS-750SKSS and JS-1500SKSS can be fitted with a MAC 3 float switch to start and stop automatically. The three-phase JST models are normally run from a pump control panel with floats or level probes.

What size solids can they pass?

JS Pumps quotes a maximum solids size of 21 mm for the 2 inch models (JS-750SKSS and JST-8SKSS) and 44 mm for the JS-1500SKSS, JST-15SKSS and JST-22SKSS. Ask us for the figure on the larger 4 inch models before sizing a job around them.

Can they be installed on a guide rail?

Yes. We supply stainless steel coupling foot, claw and top bracket kits in SR50SS, SR80SS and SR100SS sizes, so the pump can be lowered into and lifted out of a chamber without disconnecting the rising main. Match the kit to your pump outlet.
