Well Buddy
The Well Buddy range is a pair of lightweight plastic multistage submersible pumps for moving clean water at high pressure from wells, springs, clean rivers and storage tanks. Four plastic impeller stages inside a stainless steel casing build up to 45 metres of head (4.5 bar), which is enough to run garden sprinklers, push water along a long hose or lift it to a tank on higher ground.
Both models run on standard 230v single-phase mains from a 1.0 kW motor and weigh 11 to 13 kg, so you can lift one in and out of a tank by hand. Each has a 1″ BSP outlet and comes with a stepped hosetail that takes 1″ hose, ¾” hose or a ¾” threaded fitting.
Well Buddy 1000A or 1000P: choose by how it switches
The two pumps share the same 4-stage design. The letter at the end of the name tells you how each one starts and stops.
The Well Buddy 1000A is the float switch version. A tethered float starts the pump as the water level rises and stops it as the level falls, so it suits transferring or emptying water from a tank, sump or well without leaving the pump running once the water has gone. It delivers up to 110 l/min and has a 10 metre power cable.
The Well Buddy 1000P is the pressure-controlled version. A built-in automatic pressure control switch starts the pump when you open a tap, hose or sprinkler and stops it when you close it, and a non-return valve is built in. That makes it the one to choose for water on demand from a rainwater tank or well. It delivers up to 100 l/min and has a longer 15 metre cable.
Well Buddy or JS-530 Well Buddy?
Despite the shared name, these are different pumps from the JS-530 Well Buddy multi-stage irrigation pumps. The JS-530 is a separate JS Pumps design with a 1.3 kW motor, up to 140 l/min, and a 110v version for site use alongside 230v. Choose the plastic 1000A or 1000P for garden, rainwater and tank work on mains power; look at the JS-530 if you need more flow or a 110v supply.

Where to Use Well Buddy Pumps
Well Buddy pumps are made for clean water at home and in the garden. Typical jobs are watering from a hand-dug well or spring, running sprinklers from a rainwater tank, and moving water between tanks, including up a slope. As multistage pumps, they trade some volume for the pressure a sprinkler or long hose run needs. Our guide to choosing the right well pump covers the wider options.
Size the job before you buy. The 45 metre maximum head is reached only at very low flow, and every metre you lift the water, every metre of hose and the pressure you want at the sprinkler all use some of it up. As a rule of thumb, 10 metres of head equals 1 bar. Check your duty against the performance curve (on the 1000A page, or ask us); our guide to pump head and flow rate shows how.
Know where the range stops. Both pumps are for clean water only, with no suspended solids or abrasive material, so they are not drainage or dirty water pumps. At 150 to 151 mm across they are also too wide for a typical 4-inch or 5-inch borehole. For narrow bores, look at the Pentax 3S 3-inch borehole pumps or the Pentair Dominator 4″ well pumps, or browse all well and borehole pumps.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Well Buddy 1000A and 1000P?
The control. The 1000A has a float switch that starts and stops the pump with the water level, and a 10 metre cable. The 1000P has a built-in automatic pressure control switch that runs the pump when a tap or sprinkler is opened, a built-in non-return valve and a 15 metre cable. Both reach 45 metres of head; the 1000A is rated to 110 l/min and the 1000P to 100 l/min.
Is this the same as the JS-530 Well Buddy?
No. The JS-530 Well Buddy is a separate JS Pumps range with a 1.3 kW motor and up to 140 l/min, available in 110v as well as 230v. The 1000A and 1000P are lightweight plastic pumps, 230v only.
Can I put a Well Buddy pump down a borehole?
Only a wide one. The 1000A is 151 mm in diameter and the 1000P 150 mm, so they will not fit a standard 4-inch or 5-inch borehole. They are intended for open wells, springs, clean rivers and storage tanks.
What pressure will I get at my sprinklers?
Less than the 4.5 bar headline, because that figure is the maximum head at almost no flow. Subtract the height from the water to the sprinkler and the friction loss in the hose, then read the flow you will get from the performance curve. A larger hose loses less to friction on long runs.
Can I use one in a rainwater tank?
Yes, provided the water is clean. Keep the pump off any sediment at the bottom of the tank, as the pumps are not designed for suspended solids or abrasive material. The 1000P suits a tank that feeds a hose or sprinklers on demand; the 1000A suits emptying or transferring water from one.
