GMP HGM Self Priming Cast Iron Dirty Water Pumps

The GMP HGM Self-Priming Cast Iron Dirty Water Pumps are a robust range of surface-mounted electric pumps designed for construction site dewatering, agricultural irrigation, emergency flood drainage, and general dirty water transfer. Built from cast iron throughout (casing, inlet flange, and impeller), with a stainless steel shaft and carbon mechanical seal, the HGM range is engineered for continuous outdoor use in demanding conditions. All models are self-priming to 6 metres, with a non-return valve on the inlet body retaining water between cycles for automatic re-priming. Maximum liquid temperature is 60°C and these pumps are not suitable for abrasive materials.

The range is available in 1½-inch, 2-inch, and 3-inch port sizes. The 2-inch 110V model is also available as a crash frame (FR) variant, with a protective steel frame for rough-site handling, and as a sack trolley (SAC) variant for easy transport between locations. Flow rates range from 290 l/min on the compact 1½-inch model to 850 l/min on the 3-inch model.

Choosing the Right Model

The HGM-1 designation indicates the 1½-inch model (EA5V, 230V). The HGM-2 covers 2-inch models: the 2757 (230V), the EBBU (110V), and 110V FR and SAC variants. The HGM-3 is the 3-inch model (1780, 230V). Naming follows GMP convention where HGM = heavy-duty dirty water, the number = port size class, and the suffix identifies the motor variant.

For most portable construction and agricultural use, the 2-inch 110V models (HGM-2 EBBU) are the most practical choice. Site power is typically 110V CTE in the UK, and the crash frame and sack trolley options make repeated moves straightforward. The 230V models suit permanent or semi-permanent installations where a standard single-phase supply is available. The 3-inch HGM-3 is appropriate where higher flow volume is the priority, such as large excavations or agricultural irrigation systems.

Where the GMP HGM is Used

Construction site dewatering is the primary application for this range. Groundwater accumulates in excavations and building foundations, and the HGM’s self-priming design allows it to draw water from depth without manual priming at each start. The non-return valve retains water in the suction pipe when the pump stops, so it re-primes automatically when restarted. The 110V crash frame (FR) variant is designed specifically for rough construction environments: the protective steel frame reduces the risk of damage during site moves and stacking, and the 110V supply is the UK standard for portable site tools.

Agricultural use is the second major application. Irrigation systems, flood drainage from fields and paddocks, and dirty water transfer from holding tanks and livestock areas all suit the HGM. The multi-blade impeller handles water carrying suspended silt, light organic material, and fine sediment without clogging. The pump can draw from open water sources such as ditches, rivers, and ponds, provided the suction lift does not exceed 6 metres. The sack trolley (SAC) variant provides convenient handling for farmers moving the pump between locations.

Flood control and emergency drainage in residential and commercial properties, industrial effluent removal, and water feature filling are other common uses. The HGM range is not trash duty (it does not have an inspection door or wear disc as the trash models do); for applications where the liquid contains larger solids or rag material, the GMP trash duty self-priming range is more appropriate. For general guidance on self-priming pump selection, see the self-priming pumps guide. The full dirty water pumps range is also available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the HGM dirty water pump and the GMP trash duty pump?

The HGM range is designed for clean and dirty water with suspended solids up to 27mm. It does not have an inspection door and is not intended for regular blockage clearance duty. The GMP trash duty range adds an inspection door on the suction body, a wear disc, and a silicon carbide seal, making it more suitable for liquids that regularly contain rag, debris, and larger soft solids. If your application involves frequent blockages, choose the trash duty range.

Why is the 110V HGM-2 rated at 1.5kW when the 230V version is rated at 1.1kW?

The 110V model draws a higher current to deliver the same approximate duty, and GMP have rated it at 1.5kW to compensate for the lower voltage. Despite the different kW ratings, both the 230V (2757) and 110V (EBBU) models produce the same flow rate of 390 l/min at 16m head. The FR and SAC variants use the same motor as the standard 110V EBBU.

What does the FR (crash frame) option add?

The crash frame is a welded steel protective enclosure that surrounds the pump body. It provides structural protection against impact damage during site handling, dropping, and stacking. It adds around 6kg to the pump weight. The crash frame is the preferred option for pumps that will be regularly moved, transported in vehicles, or used in high-risk site environments.

Can the sack trolley (SAC) variant be used as a conventional pump when not being moved?

Yes. The sack trolley mount allows the pump to be positioned, connected, and used in the normal way. When the pump needs to be moved, it can be tilted back onto the trolley wheels and rolled to the new location. The SAC variant is the most portable option for contractors who need to move the pump between jobs or sites regularly.

What suction pipe or hose is required?

The suction pipe must be rigid or semi-rigid (not standard layflat delivery hose, which collapses under suction). A reinforced suction hose of the appropriate diameter for the pump’s port size is required. Contact the AES Rewinds team for compatible suction hose and fittings to complete your installation.
