GMP Electric Surface Trash Self Priming Pumps
The GMP Electric Surface Trash Self-Priming Pumps are a range of heavy-duty cast iron surface-mounted pumps designed for clean and dirty wastewater, construction site drainage, and applications where the liquid contains soft solids and debris. Unlike the standard HGM dirty water range, all models here are fully trash duty: they are fitted with an inspection door on the suction body for rapid blockage clearance, and a wear disc on the shaft for added durability. Construction is cast iron throughout, with a stainless steel shaft and silicon carbide mechanical seal. All models are self-priming to 6 metres.
The range covers 1½-inch, 2-inch, and 3-inch port sizes, in both single-phase 230V and three-phase 400V configurations, with flow rates from 280 l/min up to 1,400 l/min. The largest model, the B3XRA-ST EANH, is supplied on a skid plate (as are all models rated 4kW and above) for stable installation on uneven ground. Maximum liquid temperature is 60°C. These pumps are not suitable for abrasive materials.
Choosing the Right Model
Model codes in this range follow a consistent pattern. The number before the K indicates port size: B1½KQA-ST = 1½-inch, B2KQA-ST = 2-inch, B3KQA-ST = 3-inch. The suffix code identifies the specific model variant; the final digit in the suffix is typically 3 or 5 for single-phase (230V) and 4 or 6 for three-phase (400V). The large high-head model, EANH, is three-phase only.
The 1½-inch EA6E/EA6F models are suitable for lighter duty drainage where flow volume is modest. The 2-inch EAR3/EAR4 models are the most commonly used for general site dewatering and wastewater transfer. The 3-inch EAR5/EAR6 models handle higher flow volumes and pass solids up to 27mm. The EANH is a high-head, high-capacity model producing 1,400 l/min at 26m head, suited to pumping over greater distances or heights.

Typical Applications for Trash Duty Self-Priming Pumps
The trash duty designation means these pumps are built for liquids that contain soft solids, rag, and debris that would block a standard pump. Construction site dewatering is the most common application: excavation pits and trenches accumulate groundwater mixed with silt, sand, and construction debris, and the inspection door allows any blockage to be cleared on site without tools or pipe disconnection. The silicon carbide seal is more resistant to abrasion than a carbon seal, extending service life in these demanding conditions.
Sump emptying, grey water removal, and surface drainage in commercial and industrial premises are other typical uses. Where a pump needs to handle liquid that carries soft solids such as leaves, light sludge, or suspended particles, the trash duty impeller and wider passage sizes provide reliable performance without the clogging risk that would affect a standard centrifugal pump. The 1½-inch models are portable enough for repeated site moves; the 3-inch and high-head EANH are suited to fixed installations or large-volume temporary pumping operations.
For applications where the liquid is clean or only lightly dirty (no significant solid content), the GMP HGM dirty water range is a lower-cost alternative. For guidance on self-priming pump selection, see the AES Rewinds self-priming pumps guide. The full surface mounted pumps range is also available.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a trash duty pump and a standard dirty water pump?
A trash duty pump has a wider impeller passage to handle larger solids, a more robust impeller design, and an inspection door on the suction body for blockage clearance. The GMP trash range also includes a wear disc on the shaft for additional durability. Standard dirty water pumps (such as the GMP HGM) handle suspended solids but are not designed for regular blockage clearance duty or as large solid passage sizes.
What size solids can these pumps pass?
Passage varies by model. The 1½-inch models handle solids up to 11mm, the 2-inch EAR3/EAR4 models handle 19mm (230V) and 11mm (400V), the 3-inch EAR5/EAR6 models handle 27mm, and the high-head EANH handles 24mm. For applications where solid size is unpredictable or large, the 3-inch EAR5 or EAR6 provides the widest passage.
Do I need a three-phase supply for the larger models?
The EANH (5.5kW, 1,400 l/min) is only available in 400V three-phase. All other models in this range are available in both single-phase 230V and three-phase 400V. If your site has single-phase only, the largest available model is the 3-inch B3KQA-ST EAR5 at 2.2kW and 850 l/min.
Why is the EANH supplied on a skid plate?
GMP supply all models rated 4kW and above on a skid plate as standard. The skid plate provides a stable, flat base for the pump in conditions where the ground is uneven or where the pump needs to be positioned temporarily on site. It also protects the pump body from direct ground contact in wet or muddy environments.
Can these pumps run dry?
No. Like all centrifugal pumps, these models rely on the liquid being pumped to cool and lubricate the mechanical seal. Running dry, even briefly, can damage the seal and may void any warranty. A non-return valve is fitted on the inlet to retain water for re-priming, but the pump should not be started without confirming there is water in the suction line.
