GMP Fuel Oil High Volume 'Red' Diesel Transfer Pumps

The GMP Fuel Oil High Volume RED Diesel Transfer Pumps are a range of self-priming electric pumps built specifically for transferring diesel, gas oil, and paraffin. These pumps are not suitable for petrol. The RED designation identifies this as GMP’s fuel-rated series: the cast iron body is fitted with a Viton mechanical seal and Viton check valve, both essential for compatibility with petroleum distillates. Standard water pump seals would swell and fail quickly in fuel service. The open impeller design provides good self-priming performance, with suction depth to 6 metres and maximum liquid temperature of 70°C.

The range is unusually broad in voltage coverage: models are available in 110V (site supply), 230V (single-phase), and 400V (three-phase), across port sizes from 1-inch to 3-inch. This makes the RED range suitable for everything from small on-site fuel transfer with a CTE socket to large-scale industrial diesel decanting. An ATEX-rated variant is also available separately for use in hazardous zone environments.

Choosing the Right Model

Port size is the primary selection factor. 1-inch models (EA2L/EA2M) deliver up to 140 l/min and are suited to filling small plant, generators, or fuel storage jerry cans. 1½-inch models (3516/3501) step up to 290 l/min, appropriate for road plant refuelling or medium tank filling. 2-inch models (EA2V/EA1S) reach 450 l/min and are the most common choice for bulk diesel transfer on construction sites and farms. The 110V EAHA 2-inch model is designed specifically for UK site power where CTE (commando) supplies are standard. 3-inch models (EA9C/EAM7/EANS) handle 850 l/min up to 1,200 l/min and suit high-volume commercial or industrial fuel transfer applications.

Typical Applications for RED Diesel Transfer Pumps

On construction and civil engineering sites, RED diesel transfer pumps are used to fill excavators, dumpers, generators, and other plant machinery from bulk storage tanks. The self-priming design means the pump can draw fuel from an IBC or tank positioned at or below the pump inlet without the need for a pre-filled suction line. The 110V EAHA model is designed specifically for sites where only CTE site supply is available, removing the need for a transformer or temporary 230V supply.

Agricultural applications include transferring gas oil from farm storage to tractors, agricultural machinery, and crop drying equipment. The 1½-inch and 2-inch models are the most practical sizes for this use: large enough for reasonable transfer rates, but compact enough to move between locations or mount on a trailer. The non-return valve retains fuel in the suction line between uses, so the pump is ready to use immediately without re-priming each time.

Industrial fuel management is the third main sector. Where large volumes of diesel need to be moved between bulk tanks, the 3-inch models (EA9C, EAM7, EANS) deliver the flow rates required for commercial dispensing and bulk filling. The EANS, at 1,200 l/min and 4kW, is the highest-capacity pump in this standard range. For use in potentially flammable environments, the ATEX-rated RED pump range is available separately. Frequently Asked Questions

Why can these pumps not be used with petrol?

The RED range is designed for diesel, gas oil, and paraffin only. Petrol has a lower flashpoint and is significantly more volatile, creating a fire and explosion risk if used with standard pump components. The Viton seals in these pumps are compatible with diesel and gas oil but do not provide adequate safety for petrol service. For ATEX-rated fuel handling in classified hazardous areas, the ATEX RED pump range is available.

What is the difference between the standard RED range and the ATEX RED range?

The standard RED range uses a conventional electric motor and is suitable for general non-hazardous environments such as open sites, farm yards, and industrial premises with normal ventilation. The ATEX RED pump has a flameproof motor certified to ATEX 94/9/CE (II 2G Ex d IIC T4) for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified hazardous areas where flammable vapour concentrations may occur. The ATEX variant is listed separately in the AES Rewinds shop.

What does the Viton seal do that a standard carbon seal does not?

Viton is a fluoroelastomer compound with high resistance to petroleum distillates, oils, and fuels. A carbon mechanical seal, used in water pumps, would swell, degrade, and fail rapidly in contact with diesel or gas oil. The Viton seal and Viton check valve in the RED range maintain their integrity in continuous fuel service, preventing leaks and extending pump life significantly.

Can these pumps transfer red diesel (gas oil)?

Yes. Gas oil (also known as red diesel, or heating oil when sold as 35-second oil) is exactly the intended application for this range. The pumps are suitable for gas oil as supplied for agricultural, construction, and heating plant use. Note that the legal requirements for red diesel use have changed in the UK: verify that your application is a permitted use under current HMRC rules before purchasing gas oil.

Is a meter or nozzle required for accurate fuel dispensing?

The pumps themselves do not include metering or a dispensing nozzle. For accurate fuel dispensing to plant and vehicles, an inline flow meter and trigger nozzle should be used. Contact the AES Rewinds team for advice on compatible fuel dispensing accessories to complete your setup.
